This vineyard really shines in this vintage, sending up concentrated aromas of blackberry and raspberry fruit. It leads into a ripe, plump and gently rounded mid-palate, with Burgundian balance. Sweet plum and cherry fruit, hints of cocoa, no overt oak and pleasingly soft tannins all contribute to this graceful wine.

This precision-crafted pinot Gris is a blend of grapes from three excellent vineyards, all cropped down to about two tons per acre, what the winemaker rightly calls “ridiculously low for Pinot Gris.” Flavors are pineapple and pear, proportionately balanced against just-right natural acids and tannins. Hints of honey, caramel and spice complete the show. Best Buy. —P.G.

This is a wine that reflects the classically deep fruit and the vagaries of the vintage. It opens with a bit of high-toned volatility, which heightens the flavors and brightens the wine, but may attenuate the ageability. Cherries in brandy, astringent tannins, and lots of juicy acidity.

Somehow through the magic of winemaker Peter Rosback this wine doesn’t taste like a barrel sample. It’s smooth, round, supple and packed with ripe fruits. Blend’s blend is 42 percent syrah, 40 percent cabernet sauvignon, and 18 percent merlot; a combination that is becoming increasingly popular among Columbia valley winemakers. Ripe, primary fruit flavors show lots of raspberry and cherry, lightly coated with chocolate, cinnamon and mocha.

Lovely aromatics, with soft, cherry fruit, very pretty, round and rich. No heat, no heavy hand with the oak, but it has the “yum” factor, which Pinot so often lacks. Forward and ready now.

This is Merlot taken to its limits (and a bit beyond). Super-ripe Champoux Vineyard fruit delivers flavors of blackberry jam, and punches through 15% alcohol. The barrel aging brings in coffee, toffee and smoke, and there is a liquorous, slightly hot edge to the finish.

From a young block of Cab Franc at the legendary Champoux vineyard, this captures the grape’s earthy, herbal elements, bringing the classic green coffee bean streaks to the tannins, and keeping the fruit tight and muscular. Cassis and purple plum flavors are wrapped in tough, chewy tannins. This one needs more time to show its strength.

This terroir-driven Pinot, from the Oregon side of the Columbia River, shows a dramatically different profile than the Willamette Valley Pinots commonly associated with the state. Kudos to winemaker Peter Rosback for finding great Pinot all over Oregon. This unique vineyard shows classic varietal fruit laced with mineral, kissed with toast, and finished with delicious mocha flavors from new oak barrels. The tart, tangy spine keeps it balanced and extends the fruit flavors well into a long, crisp finish.

Tight and muscular, this captures the mix of earth, herb, bark, currant, berry and mineral that makes this such a special site. Here it is presented raw, unhinged even, with angular, striated flavors that will need more time to smooth out. But the elements for an ageworthy, deep and expressive wine are all in place.

The fruit is from the Eola Hills, and it has an interesting bloody character, like raw meat. It’s a more Burgundian style than most Sineanns, and riper than most Eola Hills fruit. It hints at earth, leather and marrow, with pretty, plummy fruit laced with cinnamon. An elegant, yet distinctive wine.
