Curiously lean, given the fine vintage. It’s filled with green, stalky aromas and flavors. The palate wants to find some ripe berries and discovers only tart acids and austerity. There’s some hidden fruit that would come out with the right foods, but on its own it’s one dimensional. —S.H.

Wow. This wine is dry to the point of austerity. And the tannins are powerful, leaving the palate numb. It’s also on the alcoholic side. The core of black cherry fruit will wake up, soften and sweeten with rich foods like barbecue.

This Zin-based blend is Exhibit A in what can go wrong if youÕre not careful up under the fierce, thin-air summer sun of the Sierra Foothills. It is filled with the hot, bitter taste of raisins that have been drained of all their sweetness. That leaves tannins and alcohol and not much else.
