Skylite’s Cabernet captures a pleasing sweetness around the flavors of boysenberry and pie cherry. There is also an interesting streak of hay or grain that stretches into a well-defined finish. It’s a nicely balanced wine that doesn’t overreach; the barrel flavors mix in well with the crisp, clean fruit.

This hits the palate rather hard and green, with thin fruit that does not seem quite ripe. The barrel flavors add fat and caramel over the top, but remain unintegrated and seem out of place. The wine reverts to its green side as the tannins take over.

A blend of Minnick and Ash Hollow grapes, this is a punchy, high-toned take on Syrah. Particularly attractive are the bright raspberry flavors, peppered with, well, pepper! It’s got the kind of verve that you find in a simple Grenache, and finishes light and tangy.
