This brilliant Pinot Noir exhibits the finest qualities of the great 2007 vintage. It’s a big wine, filled with fruity flavor and sizable tannins, but so fresh and silky, it’s drinkable now, with decanting. But give it 3–4 years to let the black cherries, anise, sweet sandalwood and dusty spice flavors mellow.

Lots of people will open this wine before its time. They shouldn’t. It’s big, bold and gawky now, like an adolescent teenager, all primary fruit blackberries, cherries, cola, pomegranates, orange rind and smoky sandalwood. As good as it is, the fresh tannins and acids really need time to mellow and integrate with the fruit and oak. Better after 2011.

Quite pale for a Pinot Noir, and with a lilting, delicately silky mouthfeel. But there’s nothing light about the flavors, which are intricate as a tapestry. The cherries, raspberries, orange peel and vanilla have an herbal edge of rosehip tea and rhubarb pie. Now through 2012.

Tremendously fruity, offering an orchard-burst of delicious cherry, red plum, raspberry pie filling, cinnamon toast, anise and cola flavors. Shows the silky texture and racy acidity of a fine coastal Pinot Noir.

A touch of barnyard funk gives this Pinot an old-fashioned Burgundian touch. But the fruit is all California, suggesting ripe cherries and raspberries, coated with plenty of sweet, smoky oak. A very nice, high-class Pinot Noir for drinking now and through 2013.

Nothing small about this Pinot Noir. It’s almost as good as the 2007, which was terrific. Dry and elegant, it shows massively concentrated cherry, raspberry and cola flavors, with a rich coating of smoky sandalwood. Wonderful now, but the youthful power suggests time in the cellar through 2015 or so.
