Somewhat rustic on the nose, but the palate opens up with structured, ripe, dense tannins. It has a good backbone of freshness, finishing light and fruity.

Dried raisins, intense and concentrated, drive this impressive wine. It is dry, structured and packs big tannins. It has the density to suggest aging.

Nutty and earthy, with maple sugar flavors and just a hint of red-skinned fruit. Sweet and a bit simple, but satisfying nonetheless.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A fine, foursquare wine from one of the Symington-owned Port houses. It shows good tannins, delicious perfumed fruit and great ripeness. Along with this attractive fruit, there is an impressive streak of dry tannins which promise good aging. Imported by Premium Port Wines Inc.

Bottled in 1998, this is a delicious, immediately approachable LBV. The intensity of sweet, soft fruit is balanced by a dark, dry element that gives it structure.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bottled in 1996, but just being released to the U.S. market, this is a relatively mature LBV, with aromatic notes of caramel and dried cherries. Flavors are a bit simple and sweet, revolving around dates, figs and cherries, while the mouthfeel is soft and jammy right up until the finish, which picks up a scour of acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Delicious sweet raisin and mulled wine fruit, full of herbs and nutmeg spice. This is a ripe wine, but too heavy, showing some austerity, but no sign of tiring.

A traditional crusted LBV that has had plenty of time to mature in the bottle. Perhaps a little too much time, since the brandy is beginning to show through as the wine dries out. But it is still a delicious, mature Port, worth enjoying now. —R.V.

Another Symington family brand that often shows well, Smith Woodhouse’s 10-Year Oldis big and firm, quite tannic even, and very rich and dry. This is a good, solid, powerful wine, with great finishing acidity.

This fresh, fruity wine comes from one of the Symington Group’s second labels, one which often impresses by its quality. This Port is herbal, with chocolate flavors, black fruits and a good, clean, dry aftertaste.
