Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the kind of wine that goes with just about anything that goes with red. It’s dry and completely balanced in acids and tannins, with a good mélange of cherries and mushroomy, earthy notes, and a silky, velvety mouthfeel. Really hard to find anything not to like.

Lovely mountain Zin, showing a briary, brambly quality to intensely flavored wild blackberries, blueberries and cherry liqueur. There also are tiers of peppery spices, licorice, chocolate mint and soy. Polished and dry, this fine, complex Zinfandel is drinking well now.

Plenty of Rhône-style Syrah character, with pretty notes of blackberry, blueberry and lavender, in a very dry package. Has a tannic density that is rich, well structured and finishes dry.

Smells sugary and caramelly, like Port, although it’s basically dry in the mouth, with flavors of ripe blackberries and cocoa. Nice with barbecue, burgers, sausage. EDITOR: Concerning the appellation. As far as I know, the official government designation is California Shenandoah Valley. However wineries in the appellation print it differently on their front labels. When I review, I reproduce the AVA as it appears on the front label.

This tastes sort of like Zin. Starts with wild berry, pepper, and gamy, leathery notes, and turns rich and full-bodied in the mouth, with robust berry and spice flavors. Fairly strong tannins mark this rustic wine.

Gets the job done with simple, Zinny flavors of wild berries, tobacco, spices and herbs, wrapped in firm tannins. A bit sharp on the finish, but fine as an inexpensive everyday red.

Softly fruity, clean and vibrant, this is a pleasant wine that seems made to sip in a garden. It smells like flowers and tastes like fresh tree fruits. The finish is a bit sweet, and very spicy.

There’s beautiful blackberry and cassis fruit in this Cab, undergirded by a rich, coffee-infused earthiness. It’s completely dry and the tannins are fairly fierce, but nothing a good steak can’t negotiate. In fact, it’s a great food wine, classy and understated. The best Sobon Cab ever and a great value.

Not as over the top as some Viogniers, with a tight, lemony structure and crisp acids. On the finish, some pretty flavors of peaches and tropical fruits turn up. Distinctive and clean.

Smoky, slightly stinky (in a good way), with solid blackberry fruit. It’s a bit lean and hard on the palate, finishing with mild tannins. If this fills out it will be even better.
