Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As an inexpensive introduction to Barossa Shiraz this fits the bill, offering a moderately full-bodied, syrupy mouthfeel to complement the aromas and flavors of raspberry, cedar and mint. Finishes bright and fresh, without any roasted qualities.

A soft, easy blend of Shiraz and Grenache, the 2006 Gamekeeper’s Reserve starts off with a slightly tarry, rubbery note, then settles down to deliver flavors of cola, spice, black cherries and plums. It’s medium-bodied and well rounded, making it a versatile weeknight companion. Imported by Beam Wine Estates.

A good by-the-glass, textbook New World Cabernet pour; offers stewy blackberry, buttercream and oak flavors from bouquet to finish. Dried green herb gives the back end a little oomph.

Manages simultaneous youth, energy and classy reserve. On the nose and palate, this Shiraz is a pretty cocktail of chewy plums and mixed berries, with a twist of caramel. Utterly addictive. Drink now–2008.

From vines over 70 years old, this delightful wine combines sheer size with the finesse of a great red. Powerful flavors of anise, blackberry jam, sweet cassis and dark chocolate cascade over the palate, stunning with richness and intensity. Yet the wine maintains a lilting grace and lightness, not to mention the near-perfect balance for aging.

Now, five years after the harvest, this wine still seems incorrigibly young. It’s still very primary, showing lots of blackberry fruit mingled with Nilla Wafer crumbs—like a rich berry-vanilla compote. Hold for another few years, unless you’re looking only for primary fruit. —J.C.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very powerfully oaked, this old-vine wine opens with aromas of smoke and vanilla, and the beautiful perfume of young new wood. The flavors are oaky, too, but the underlying fruit flavors are so dramatically bold, they handle the wood well. Long in the middle palate and the finish, this wine is stuffed with fruit.

Liking it wasn’t an issue for reviewers—we all dug this Barossa, but had a hard time agreeing on its aromas and flavors. Imagine a bright raspberry, licorice, toasted-coconut and nutmeg bouquet coupled with big cherry, raspberry and cream flavors and a licorice-coffee finish…well, go ahead and wake up from your dream now.

A crazy quilt blend of Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay that combines tart citrus flavors with riper ones of tropical fruits. The wine is very dry and acidic, and fun to drink. Definitely a great value.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From younger vines, a fresh and juicy wine notable for sheer succulence of flavor. It has youthful flavors of jam and immature, perky tannins and acids that feel lively on the palate. Yet there’s a sense of harmony and elegance.
