Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells a bit underripe, with a whiff of fresh asparagus, and richness is missing in the mouth. The flavors are of citrus fruits, lees, oak and fresh herbs. Nicely dry and crisp, but rather lean.

A very fine and stylish Chardonnay made crisp and tight with a spine of steely acidity. The flavors are also cool-climatish, ranging from ripe citrus fruits to apples and peaches. There’s quite a bit of oak and lees but both are perfectly in balance.

Starts off with classic black currant, tobacco, chocolate and smoke. Very pure. Not a big wine, but silky and graceful; defines Stag’s Leap District. With balance like this, it’s definitely worth cellaring.

A lean, soft, citrusy Chardonnay, brimming with lemon aromas coupled with smoky oak. Tastes citrusy, but sur lie aging gives it a rich creaminess. Don’t expect a fat, plush wine. Needs food to show its stuff.

Best known for their classic Cabernets, this producer has a confident and skilled hand with Chardonnay, too. This is a well-proportioned wine that displays complex apple, lime, vanilla and earthy mineral notes. There’s a crisp tautness to the apple fruit and tart citrus acidity that carries on the long, spicy finish. A powerhouse that promises to open up over the next year. Top Value.

This Napa stalwart is beautifully integrated. Leesy and citrus notes accent the solid apple and toast profile on both the nose and in the mouth. It’s big, but displays impeccable balance and a great mouthfeel. Lime and spice play against richer butterscotch, vanilla and toasty elements on the long, handsomely textured finish.

Opens with a lovely bouquet of lemon and tart pineapple fruit with anise, mineral and tobacco accents. The lemony note resurfaces on the pear, white peach and green apple palate. A chalk element adds interest and balances the overall zingy, bright tone in this tangy, high-alcohol wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Slightly richer and earthier than the Fay this year, with black cherry and tobacco flavors that glide effortlessly across the palate thanks to a wonderfully supple texture. It does thin out a little on the finish, so it might be best consumed over the near term.

Here’s a Cab to put in the cellar. It’s big and rich and frankly sensational, just massive in blackberries, currants and sweet dark chocolate. The tannins are fierce, but very fine, and the overall balance is impeccable. Too astringent now, even with decanting, but should easily improve in the bottle throughout the next decade.

What a great success. Oozes with blackcurrant jam and cassis and a dash of black pepper. Flamboyant oak adds a perfume of vanilla and smoke. Fleshy, long and full, this beautiful wine is not a monster, but it coats the palate with spicy flavors that epitomize class and style.
