Dark and dense, yet somehow soft and approachable, this 100% is once again loaded with rich black fruits. Everything is in balance, with a captivating tension strung between the fruit, acid and tannins. This is a wine you can’t keep your lips off.

An immense, black, moody wine with a spectacular mix of black fruits, cassis, earth, soy and forest floor, it remains thoroughly delicious and polished despite its size. This will clearly improve with more bottle age, but it’s already impressive and drinking well. Long and textural, the finish lingers with ground coffee and baking chocolate highlights.

Elegance is the word for this lovely Cabernet, which manages to be dark and mysterious, yet remains supple, fruit-driven and immediately enjoyable. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, tight and tannic, with cassis and blueberry in equal proportion. The tannins are fine-grained and supple, and there is just the right coffee ground bitterness to the the finish; it sets you up for another sip. This is the sort of finesse that is more commonly found in Bordeaux; a pleasure to drink and yet quite ready for the cellar for a decade or more.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The third release of the 424 blend (45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot) is sourced from top Yakima Valley vineyards: Sheridan, Dineen and DuBrul. Once again the percentage of Cab Franc has been upped; it’s easy to see why. The grape brings earthy details to both nose and mouthfeel imparting mushroom, wet leaf and moist earth along with coffee and blueberry components. The wine is in lovely balance and loaded with blackberry and black cherry fruits.

Top lots from Sheridan, Dineen and Meek vineyard grapes go into this reserve. This is always the most thick and dense of the Stevens wines, and the tannins, though very well managed, are chewy and substantial. They dominate this young wine, but the stacked and subtle layers of red and black fruits, leaf and forest floor materials, moist earth and ashes keep the flavors complex and interesting. This wine absolutely must be decanted, and can be cellared almost indefinitely.

BlackTongue has some of the same umami-soaked character as the nearby Boushey vineyard Syrahs, with perhaps more earth, smoke, tar and licorice, and a little less funk and composty aromas. A stylistic note—this is a very dry Syrah, deep, compact, layered with black fruit flavors, cassis and very dry tannins.

Sharply acidic, deep in color, and a bit more fruit forward than the other Stevens reds, this is loaded with sweet plum and delicious cinnamon-infused baking spices. Young vines are the reason, adding light floral top notes, with powdered sugar and sweet candied grape in the finish.

The name alone draws your attention (heaven help us if “Black Tongue” ever meets Mark Ryan’s “Dead Horse”!) but the wine delivers the goods. Tight, tart, compact and spicy, it’s loaded with intriguing spices. Peppery and expressive, this is still quite young and very much needs decanting or additional years in the bottle to open it up.

This pure Merlot is full-bodied and still rather oaky, but packed with very firm, compact black fruits, and layered with smoke, graphite, black olive. Dense and textural, there is a fine grip to the tannins.

This is the first Stevens Cab Franc since 2001. It’s dark and smoky, with an interesting mix of violets and plummy fruit. It carries the Stevens imprint of black fruits, licorice, clean earth, graphite and black olive—a stiff, tannic, tight wine with the structure to age for decades.
