Aromas are muted, with faint scents of smoky oak and blackberry veering into cassis. Flavors are similarly hard to detect, beyond the sweetness of oak. The tannins meanwhile are substantial, and it finishes bitter. It’s a gamble if this will improve in the cellar, but it probably won’t.

A bit lean, with sleek berry and herb flavors and a sharpness softened only partially by sweet oak. ItÕs dry and clean and has the best wood and tannins that money can buy, but ultimately itÕs thin, especially for this price.

Oaky and dull, with flavors of sweetened pineapple juice that are heavily plastered with caramel and buttered popcorn. Needs greater restraint and subtlety.

Shows the soft acids, gentle tannins and herbaceousness that mark most Alexander Valley Cabs, with supporting cherry, red currant and licorice flavors. It’s a complex wine, balanced and intriguing, and a fine pairing for a very wide variety of foods. Interestingly, indigenous, or wild, yeast was used for fermentation.

The trick of making Zinfandel elegant is to make it feel texturally like Cabernet Sauvignon, while maintaining Zin’s flavors. Stuhlmuller’s Zin does just that. It’s full-bodied, dry and smooth, with soft velvety tannins and a long finish. Yet the briary, peppery, wild berry fruit flavors are all Zinfandel.

Sweet in fruit, like pastry filling, and softly tannic, this ripe, direct Cab has rich flavors of blackberries, cherries, cassis, mocha and anise, enhanced by smoky oak. It’s a lush, elegant wine for early drinking.

This is a bold, rich Chard with flavors ranging from apples and pears through hints of pineapple. Oak brings nuances of smoke, vanilla and buttered toast. The crisp mouthfeel leads to a long, spicy finish.

This distinguished Cabernet deserves its reserve status. It shows the softness and herbal quality of Alexander Valley, along with rich tiers of red currants, cherry pie and mocha flavors. The tannic structure gives it special complexity. Now through 2012.

This is a young, dynamic wine that’s fancy enough to have with your best food. It shows well-ripened fruit flavors, and is very dry, with a good boost of acidity. Also has some pretty good tannins to cut through beef. I think it’s at its best now and for the next three years.
