This is a big, brawling wine that needs decanting to open up. It has aromas of hung meat, coffee, plums, blackberries and chocolate, and is oaky. Tannic and rather show down now, but you can detect the cherry, chocolate and spice flavors. Air well, or wait until 2006.

Vibrant cherry, chocolate, olive and woody-smoky aromas lead to a soft and accessible red wine. Feels good and supple, with generous fruit. Finishes with a dusting of fine tannins. Decant, or best after 2005. Syrah-Mourvedre-Grenache.

Summerwood is an up-and-coming winery in western Paso Robles that’s doing a good job with Rhône varieties. This Roussanne-Viognier blend is creamy and unctuous, almost honeyed in extremely ripe tropical fruit, buttery oak and spice flavors. Fortunately, the acidity is good.

Quite tannic and tough now, and taut and lean-feeling, with good acidity. Rich in meat, blackberry, smoke and vanilla. Falls off a bit in the mouth, or would score higher, but still a very good wine.

Dark and ripe, with soft acids and tannins and a velvety texture carrying chocolate and blackberry flavors. Fully dry, though, and balanced. Mainly Syrah, with splashes of Grenache and Roussanne.

Smells as fine in currant, vanilla and smoky oak as a good North Coast Cab. It’s rich in fruits and herbs, and in astringent tannins. An acidic bitterness, however, suggests limited ageabilty. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

The fruit stars in this Rhône red blend. It’s all summer-sweet raspberries, cherry compote infused with milk chocolate and a trickle of cassis, drizzled with vanilla and smoked in oak barrels. The wine is very soft, yet with enough acidity to provide balance and freshness.

I love this wine! It has a great full-bodied texture and flavors of mango, vanilla, and hazelnut. I also recently went to a tasting at the vineyard, which is beautiful, and they have a number of great wines to choose from.

Much fuller than the typical viognier. Strong notes of vanilla and stone fruit flavors. This was one of my favorites of the ten wines I tried while visiting their tasting room in Paso.
