Fairly rugged in tannins, with an edgy mouthfeel, this wine shows earth, blackberry and coffee flavors. It’s very dry.

Flamboyant in cherries, currants and sweet garden herbs, this wine’s tannins are ample, but intricate and soft. Turns a bit thin in the mid-palate, and then reprises the cherries on the finish.

At nearly six years of age, this Zin is fully ready to drink. It’s dropped its hard tannins and is now soft and supple, offering rich flavors of blackberries, cherries, cola, figs, cedar and pepper. Purists will find it overly sweet.

This Cab is well over five years old, but it’s still young, and has that taste of primary fruits that marks an immature wine. Freshly crushed blackberries and cherries, with accents of cassis, wash over the palate, wrapped into firm, but fine, mountain tannins. Seems like it needs more aging, and maybe a lot of it. Try 2010–2018.

A fine vintage Port-style wine, rich in chocolate-infused cassis flavors. Feels softly plush and velvety, and is very sweet. Nice way to end a meal with a chocolate dessert.

Marvelously rich and dense, with well-ripened fruit and sweet, dessert-like flavors suggesting cherry liqueur-filled chocolate candies. But it drinks dry and dustily tannic, a balanced, although heady, wine of great style. —S.H.
