Delicious nose of sweet hay with mango, pineapple and tangerine notes. Elegant and balanced, with more restrained apple flavors and a melony mouthfeel. Nice finish. Good character.

Another terrific Sangiovese from Swanson. Full, rich aromas of ripe plums, blackberry, spice, smoke and oak. Tastes ripe, rich and round, with great tannin structure. Velvety and complex, sumptuous and lush, it’s really of fine quality.

From a winery that seldom stumbles, a lush, sexy Merlot. Its cassis, unsweetened chocolate and oak flavors are wrapped in chewy tannins that make your tongue stick to the gums. It’s a young, dramatic wine. Drink now, with roast duck or pork tenderloin.

Swanson has a great track record with this wine, which is always in need of time on release. The 2005 shows classic Napa structure, with hard but near-perfect tannins and lush, oak-sweetened black currant, cherry and dark chocolate flavors. Brilliant, but will benefit from a good three or four years in the cellar. Should evolve well beyond 2012.

Shows the difficulties of growing Sangiovese, even in posh Oakville. The wine is acidic and one-dimensional, with cherry jam, cola and oak flavors.

Powdered spices predominate on the nose—cocoa and cinnamon—but there’s also some vanilla extract and thick-smelling black-cherry fruit. Plush and velvety in the mouth, where the oak begins to take over. A well-made wine in a woody style.

Swanson deftly avoided green, unripe flavors in this cool vintage, although this wine flirts with them, offering a spearmint edge to the pineapple, peach, fig and honeysuckle flavors. It’s really a delicious wine, dry and clean in acidity, with a long, racy finish.

Tannic and fruity, this young Merlot has upfront primary cherry, blackberry, plum and coffee flavors, and is very dry. It’s balanced in every way, with a nice edge of oak, but those tannins dominate, and suggest rich meats and cheeses.

Ripe and rich in apples, citrus fruits and spearmint flavors that drink a little sweet, but there’s a strong current of tingly acidity to offset the honeyed finish. Enjoy this stylish wine with shellfish.

A perfect summer blush wine. Made in the style of the southern Rhône, it’s rich in strawberry, raspberry, rosehip tea, vanilla and spice flavors, brightened with zesty acidity. Just delicious with smoked meats, tempura, ahi tuna tartare.
