Here’s a rich, fruity, immensely likable wine filled with wild berry and plum flavors. The tannins are fine and soft, and it finishes dry and long. Its clean, balanced nature makes it easy to drink.

Opens with a taut but full bouquet of dense, black plum fruit and eucalytpus accents that blend into seductive licorice and dark cherry flavors and a fat chewy texture. Finishes long, with rich flavors and full even tannins. This wine is still just a baby, with a great life ahead of it.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The nose of this wine is exceedingly complex, with lavender, leather, earth and spice notes riding over gentle red fruits. Multilayered, with a long finish that just exudes class.

Now in its maturity, the 2006 Tahbilk Viognier shows developed notes of roses, herbal tea and grain while still evincing a youthful expression of fresh pine needles. It’s concentrated, broad and viscous with a medium, hay-flavored finish. Drink now.

Tahbilk is proud owner of the largest Marsanne holdings in the world, with a reputation for making ageworthy examples. Perhaps this one just needs more time, then, as it comes across as nothing more than a nicely balanced, medium-bodied dry white with modest notes of pears and almonds.

Has flavors of blackberry and grape. At this stage of its young life, this Shiraz is dominated by a veneer of oak, and seems flat, rather than vibrant, because of it. A year or two in bottle may yield a plumper, rounder wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a wine that feels old-fashioned but still not ready to drink. It smells nutty and dusty, with black pepper and anise accents. Its plum fruit core is wound very tightly, and encased in a fair amount of good-quality oak. Tannins are thick and wooly, so much so that I’d forget that I even had this in the cellar until Bush is out of office, then drink through 2014 or so. Imported by Broadbent Selections, Inc.

This varietal Marsanne has pretty almond and coffee liqueur aromas, and a palate rife with grassy, citrusy tones. It sounds disjointed but actually works quite well. Acidity is lively and would be razor sharp, were it not saved by a moderating minerally overlay. Worth seeking out.

This Cab is already turning somewhat brick in color. Its flavors and aromas are of red fruit, but they are less fleshy than they are like skin and seeds. The wine’s pleasing, smooth mouthfeel is its best feature. Imported by Broadbent Selections, Inc.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tahbilk, one of Australia’s historic wineries, has turned out a velvety-textured Shiraz named for one of the company’s long-time winemakers. This is a medium-bodied, yet velvety-soft Shiraz that boasts plenty of intensity. If its blackberry, licorice and vanilla flavors develop more complexity over the next few years, the 89 rating may seem stingy.
