Talenti’s Riserva Brunello is a beautiful wine on all levels. There’s intensity and purity here with blackberry notes that blend with mineral and light shadings of smoke and spice. The wine ends with power and determination and a very long, spicy finish.

Talenti’s Rosso di Montalcino delivers impressive intensity and aromatic complexity. You’ll get notes here of cherry, wild berries, wet earth, violets and exotic spice. The wine is silky and rich on the palate and leaves loads of cherry flavors on the close.

Riccardo Talenti, grandson of Pierluigi Talenti, the grand old man of Montalcino, currently makes one of the finest Brunellos with the help of consultant Carlo Ferrini. They are now using new wood for aging, and the extra layer of richness this brings is apparent in the comparative accessibility of this wine. Yet it is also huge, with classic tannins and intense, concentrated flavors of sweet blackberry jelly.

Fine wood shavings and rich tones of vanilla and Indian spice distinguish this modern Brunello. You’ll also recognize aromas of black cherry, leather, espresso and licorice that add pretty highlights to the wine’s dense, velvety texture.

Rather reduced, with a touch of peanut to the tight nose. The question here is whether more time will allow this wine to open, or is it simply lacking in complexity? For now it seems condensed and punched down, good but plain as the category goes. Hold until 2006.

Riccardo Talenti’s 2005 Brunello offers slightly raw or sharp notes of white cherry, forest berry, spice and cola. There’s definition and linearity here capped by fresh acidity and a specifically firm or polished quality to the tannins.

Talenti delivers a very impressive Brunello with inky-dark concentration and background layers of coffee, espresso, fudge and maraschino cherry. Give it more time to age so that those sharp points of firmness can soften and widen.

A big-time barrique wine, with lemony, sawdust-based aromas in front of sweet, ripe fruit. Quite amped up, with lots of cherry and chocolate on the midpalate and finish. Rich and pure, although it sits firmly on one plane and doesn’t show much complexity. Imported by Robert Chadderdon Selections.

Riccardo Talenti indeed demonstrates a great talent in creating this deeply territory-driven wine. You can almost taste the fine earth that nurtures each vine to maturity. Aromas include stone and ash, backed by luscious black fruit. The wine boasts excellent persistence and dimension and will appeal to those who appreciate minerality.

A touch of barnyard at first gives way to deep, dark fruit that’s spun tight on the palate. As it opens, bigger berry and black cherry flavors emerge.
