Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Has the prettiest aromas of raspberries, roasted coffee beans, vanilla, and violets, with a hint of white chocolate and cinnamon. Superextracted and dense; 15.3% alcohol. A thick, gooey, cough-medicine quality keeps the rating from soaring.

Lovely aromas of red cherries with orange-peel accents. Ripe berry, cherry and cola flavors with brushy notes grace the palate. Not heavy but instead elegantly drawn and appealing. Tarius is the new name of the winery formerly known as Domaine Archer.

The Tarius manages to be at once creamy and on the lean side; think—as its palate exhibits—cream, vanilla bean, and a smidge of lemon rind over big blackberry flavors. Just-as-dark berry, plus soil, tangy oak and slight chocolate notes show on the nose; finishes with nice, tart chalkboard-eraser, oak and blackberry flavors. —D.M.

Right from the start it’s a tad different. There’s a light apple-skin color similar to Pinot Noir, and brambly, cedar-like aromatics. Just the opposite of a rich, jammy Zin, this is a cruiserweight with spice galore—it actually borders on being a bit too piquant and sharp. An untamed Zin with a lot going on.

Lots of chocolate, carob and nut on the nose, plus raisin, more chocolate and tart blackberry on the palate—think granola bar, or trail mix, and you’re in the right ballpark. This is a profile that generally piques my interest precisely because it is a little odd. Chalky, even pasty in the mouth, it closes with the same flavors until a long and bitter—half-metallic, half-Brussels sprouts—note takes over the back end. —D.M.

A smoke, plum and spice nose opens this tart yet sweet midweight wine. Berry and plum flavors are bright on the palate and the texture is at once rich and tangy. Herb notes, with a slightly sour cast, come up on the dark finish.
