Very concentrated and ripe, with all of the daintyness of an offensive tackle dancing a jig. At this early age the wine has some spine, but it will likely grow soft and lose clarity over time. For now, expect huge doses of smoked meat, soft-ish tannins, and lush black fruit. It’s a dense, high-octane wine that would go great with any sort of stew, like wild boar or venison.

This small-batch, single-vineyard heavyweight has a lot of stuffing, power and tannin, but it’s also a rough ride, meaning the fruit and tannins hit like a jackhammer. But with good fatty foods and some decanting, the beast can be tamed. As for flavors, it delivers mostly plum and chocolate.

Everyone’s favorite summer sipper is as good as ever in 2007. It’s 50% Verdejo, 40% Viura and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, and all thrown together you get a ton of steely citrus and mineral aromas and flavors adding up to endless refreshment possibilities. Spritzy, zesty and a perennial bargain among aromatic whites.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s no shortage of ripeness in this single-vineyard, somewhat hot and wild Toro. The nose is all spice, heat and simmering black fruit, and that’s backed by a brooding, heaviy concentrated palate. Teetering on the precipice of overripe, this wine needs all the air and patience you can give it to muster elegance to match its power.

Looking to get buried by an avalanche of concentrated, jammy fruit? This will do that. It’s a willing and ready example of young Toro, unrestrained, hot and heavy. The sweet berry fruit is a little sassy with alcohol, but that’s what you expect from this rugged region. Tastes good and potent, but definitely on the candied side.

This Alicante red from Telmo Rodriguez is a giant with grapy, medicinal aromas followed by huge plum and blackberry flavors. This broad, mildly tannic red with tons of finishing coffee and leather notes fits the bill.

Even if this Moscatel begins with waxy aromas and whiffs of hard cheese, it is one excellent elixir. The palate will please with its honey, sweet melon and guava flavors, while the additional notes of white pepper and green melon add foundation. Excellent for the price, and it won’t require a Master’s degree in wine to enjoy. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

MR is a heavy Moscatel with smoky, slightly burnt aromas that almost get into popcorn territory. In the mouth, it’s round and honeyed, but again, there’s a mild acrid quality to it. Very concentrated but not totally harmonious.

More concentrated than the MR, but not necessarily better. Candle and body oil on the nose, with notes of pineapple and spice. Quite big and ripe, with intense flavors of honey, candied yams and dripping mango. Long on the finish and persistent in its emphasis on vanilla. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

Smooth, smoky and leathery is how this winner gets going, and backing that up is a palate of laser-beam intensity. This offers nothing less than an explosion of plum and cherry flavors, but the style is clean and fresh, not heavy or overoaked. Already it shows nice evolution, as it comes across drinkable. Ethereal in how the finish just slips away. Only 375 cases produced.
