True to its definition, this Rosso truly does act as “Brunello’s little sister.” It shows the same elegant aromas of spice and black fruit, but does so in a less intense and more informal manner. That same easy feeling translates to the mouth as well.

Modern, polished fruit and new wood flavors blend well in this wine. The fruit is clean, ripe, bright with sweetness and flavors of black cherries. The wine is generous, full and opulent, with softer tannins than many Brunellos. Despite this nod in the direction of an international style, the wine still has the classic Brunello power and potential for aging.

This is a bit ripe and raw with notes of blueberry, some strawberry, black ink and background shadings of graphite or charcoal. It has a simple, easy feel in the mouth with sharp cherry tones and a slightly abbreviated finish.

Early on it smells a touch cooked, as if there’s burnt grass and leather on the nose. But airing reveals fruit and style. The palate runs toward heavy, with plum and cherry flexing collective muscle that puts it on the edge of being raisiny. Still, it holds the line and delivers good overall density and bulk.

The nose here is sweet and hot with aromas that recall ripe blueberry and strawberry backed by pretty spice renderings. The mouthfeel is also sweet, oddly so, and seems chewy and juicy on the palate, but not very long in terms of flavor.

This is a great Chianti Classico Riserva that offers everything you look for in a wine from Tuscany. There’s freshness and pristine cherry aromas along with spice, black mineral and fresh acidity on the close. The wine is approachable, soft and ultimately very food-friendly.

Maybe this producer of top-flight Brunello should stick to that; Angelini’s value-priced blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Canaiolo has a strong green element; taken with the tomatoey fruit it doesn’t add up to much. On the edges there’s adequate raspberry and cherry, but it’s not enough to elevate things.

This is an elegant wine with measured but well-dosed aromas of cherry fruit, leather, tobacco and spice. It has all its elements in place in terms of aromas but where it really excels is in the mouth: It delivers bursting flavors of crisp fruit and plush cherry berry with polished tannins and great length.
