This particular Tenuta (Le Vigne a Capanno) is their top wine, and it is absolutely fabulous. I can't stress enough in this note that $25 is a small price to pay for such an aromatic and flavorful wine. Aglianico del Vulture has come into its own. The volcanic mixture of soil lends the Basilicata region, and thus the Aglianico grape, a unique flavor. This garnet colored wine has aromas of mint, violets, and spices. The flavors are of herbs and spices such as cinnamon and mint, and dark, rich cherries. It's quite complex, tannic, and so silky smooth on the palate. It lingers for quite awhile. It is such a brilliant wine that I can't believe I paid such a low price for such complexity. Ten days of maceration; 15 months in slavonian barrels; 8 months in the bottle; this wine is capable of aging up to 15 years, but I wouldn't go past 10. Pair with beef, aged cheeses, chops and game dishes.

Your note makes me want to try this wine!

Just a quick note about this winery: Le Vigne a Capanno
is Tenuta del Portale's top wine as far as price ($25);
but it's completely different from the Riserva ($20) in
taste. They both are aged in barrels and bottles
differently. Their Starsa ($15) is their typical
Aglianico. It is a solid table wine that's perfect for
any everyday tomato-based sauce, steaks, lamb, etc. The
bottom line is each one has a distinct, yet awesome
flavor and all should be tried. Price note: all prices
are from Total Wine.
