The Tenuta boasts a mature gorgeous nose of plums, smoked meat, chocolate and road tar. The complexity comes through on the palate, but it is confined to the midpalate, leaving little for the finish. While the flavors seem fully mature, the structure is not; hence the slight disconnect on the palate.

Began with unpleasant swampy aromas, but they blew off, revealing dark fruit, spices and an earthiness that had nothing to do with the initial smells. As the wine opened up, it grew more interesting and ended up as quite an impressive wine, with pleasant flavors and good length.

An old fashioned Barbera; the wine is not totally ripe, but on the plus side it has bright strawberry flavors if a little too much acidicity. The finish, although quite long, is also a little sour.

The Vigna Ròca Neira is no shrinking violet. It weighs in at 14.5% alcohol, and is a massive wine with blackberry liqueur aromas, big plummy superripe flavors and a dense finish. A wine of little subtlety, but a good deal of character, it should be served with grilled meat, the more raw the better.

Tenuta Rocca delivers a taut, balanced Barbera d’Alba with bright fruit tones of cherry and plump blueberry backed by subtle spice and almond. The wine offers a medium to long finish with bright crispness at the end.

This modern-style Dolcetto has plenty of dark, jammy fruit, a chunky crowd-pleasing personality and enough structure underneath to give it longevity and length. A pleasant if nontraditional take on Dolcetto.

A wine where the nose is stunning and the palate non-descript. The nose is really beautiful: ripe fruit, thyme, licorice, mocha and a hint of lavender. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite carry through to the palate, where the flavors are so muted that it is a struggle to find them. Little structure and practically no grip, and yet that nose is so haunting.

Founded in 1986, Tenuta Rocca is a hilltop property in Monforte d’Alba that overlooks some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Langhe. This wonderful Barolo opens with sweet smells of candle wax, nutmeg, ginger, chocolate and bright red fruit. The wine imparts a squeaky clean, polished feel in the mouth.

Here is a bright and chewy Barbera d’Alba with loads of ripe fruit and blackberry backed by thick density and bright freshness. This is the perfect wine to pair with homemade lasagna with cheese and sliced sausage.
