Ugolforte Brunello opens with perfumed aromas of blue flower, wild berries, white cherry, cinnamon, vanilla and a slight hint of toasted coconut. In fact, those oak-driven aromas could use more time to integrate. The mouthfeel, however, is more evolved at this stage with bright acidity and a spicy aftertaste.

This is a ripe and plump Brunello that could use two or three years of cellar aging to allow the oak notes to fully integrate. The quality of the fruit is excellent—cherry, blackberry and currants abound. Immediately behind those aromas, however, is loads of spice, smoke and tar. Drink after 2012.

This is an oak-driven Brunello that imparts woodshop aromas of spice, toast, mesquite and vanilla. The wine offers loads of intensity in the mouth and gains momentum thanks to its thick, warming texture. Drink it after 2012 to allow time for those oak aromas to mellow.

This Rosso di Montalcino opens with sweet notes of cherry, vanilla and subtle shadings of spice and wet earth in the background. It’s a fresh and informal wine that’s short on the palate but that would pair well with pasta, pizza or take-out dinners.

Here’s a deviation from Brunello’s standard aromatic portfolio with herbal, bay leaf like aromas, pomegranate and grassy notes. Not as full and dense as others but pleasantly lush and fruity in the mouth. Imported by Blavod Extreme Spirits.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is an attractive 50-50 blend of Cab and Syrah with thick, lush notes of sweet vanilla, black pepper and ripe cherry. It takes a modern, New World approach and stands on its own in terms of complexity and persistence; it’s clean and fresh in the mouth with polished tannins.

Here’s a fabulous 50-50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that offers black, thick consistency and meaty aromas of cured beef, peppercorn, smoke, tobacco and loads of luscious dark berry fruit. It’s a soft, velvety wine with a plush, soft finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah blend that delivers aromas of mature fruit, plum, prune and spice. The nose lacks a bit of focus perhaps but it certainly delivers intensity and length. Warm fruit flavors and sweet spice accent the mouthfeel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Brunello opens with a russet-tinted appearance and exhibits modern use of oak that covers up some of the wine’s natural fruit aromas. Flavors of roasted coffee and black chocolate fill in the background and the wine ends with gritty, solid tannins.
