Run by four jolly brothers, Tenuta Sant’Antonio was originally purchased as grazing land before the family decided to try its luck with grapevines. Thankfully they did: This is one of the most exciting estates outside the Classico zone. This special selection wine delivers clean cherry nuances, soft toast and enduring coffee-vanilla flavors.

Although this is probably not the most successful vintage of this otherwise pristine, powerhouse wine, you will get thickly layered notes of blackberry, black cherry, cracked black pepper and humus. Slightly less intense than the 2001 vintage, this Veneto Cabernet Sauvignon does boast a very long, supple finish.

Run by four boisterous brothers, Tenuta Sant’Antonio is among the rising stars of Valpolicella. This 2004 Amarone delivers thick concentration and intense aromas of dried fruit and black licorice followed by big power and heat. The wine tastes smooth and exceptionally rich in the mouth. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

Here is a powerful and succulent Cabernet Sauvignon from the same area that makes Amarone. This wine is characterized by penetrating notes of blackberry, granite, forest berry, humus and moist soil. It’s an excellent red with powerful concentration and a spice-driven close.

This plump, medium-bodied wine starts with hints of honey, mint and pears, then delivers well-ripened fruit flavors on the palate. Shows good concentration and length on the finish, picking up just enough spice and mineral nuances to retain interest throughout a meal.

This impressive Amarone shows aromatic intensity and elegance that is expressed as black mineral, jammy cherry fruit, Indian spice, barbecue smoke and cola. It’s a thick, delicious wine with excellent extract and consistency that can match grilled meat or aged cheese.

Here’s a very different, modern approach to Valpolicella in which this otherwise thin and crisp red blend from northern Italy has been transformed (thanks to careful oak aging) into a rich, modern wine. Lingering tones of black cherry and Indian spice flavor the long finish.

It’s already showing a touch of color degradation, but don’t let that stop you. This is a smooth, creamy, elegant Amarone, with flavors of dried figs and cherries accented by hints of cocoa. Richly textured on the finish, where the fruit shines through.

Perhaps this wine is showing the effects of 2003’s torrid summer, but it doesn’t show the fresh, vibrant fruit that characterizes the best Soaves. It’s still a good, serviceable drink, but one that relies on a certain weight in the mouth and baked apple flavors bolstered by a grapefruity finish.
