Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tenuta Sette Ponti is based in Tuscany and this represents a rare example of an Italian-made French Champagne. The luminous sparkler opens with warm smells of creamy almond and cheese rind and delivers good concentration with a citrusy close. The blend is 60-40 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

A wine that gives you everything you could possibly want: complexity, elegance, intensity and a long, creamy finish. Oreno is a 50-25-25 blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese (which prove to be perfect proportions in this case). It exhibits aromas of bright cherry, prune, plum, espresso grinds and cedar wood.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Sangiovese and Merlot blend features delicate acidity and high aromatic intensity. The wine is redolent of spicebox, bramble, forest berry and almond and makes for a beautiful presentation overall. Silky tannins and more fruit flavors render a bright, vibrant mouthfeel.

Ketchup aromas are pungent and a bit overwhelming. It’s too bad because the wine tastes good thanks to its firm structure.

Tenuta Sette Ponti Sangiovese - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tenuta Sette Ponti’s internationally styled blend is heavy and dense, a mirror image of the hot ’03 vintage. Thus it pours on the blackberry, plum and fudge flavors with gusto. This is a seriously fat, opulent red that would weigh in as a heavyweight at any wrestling match. Still, it’s delicious and quite balanced. Drink from 2007 through 2009.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With a small percentage of Merlot for extra softness and plushness, this beautiful Sangiovese-based wine opens with amazing intensity, red cherry, chocolate, spice and leather. The rich, round mouthfeel would pair with creamy porcini mushroom risotto.

Vigna di Pallino is a light, well-priced and easygoing Chianti that would work with pizza or even a soup and sandwich lunch. Cherry and raspberry are wrapped around a light, compact mouthfeel.

One whiff followed by a sip or two confirms that this is a different breed for the Maremma. Why? Because there’s zero Sangiovese in it; instead the blend is 70% Cab with equal parts Alicante and Petit Verdot. The wine is big, broad, chocolaty, almost raisiny, and ultimately it scores for being full-force but perfectly balanced.

Poggio al Lupo is a super Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante and Petit Verdot that delivers loads of chocolate fudge, spice, mature fruit and sweet tobacco. The wine is soft, smooth and makes a perfect companion to succulent meat dishes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller percentages of Alicante and Petit Verdot that render a soapy, herbal nose with accents of root beer, exotic spice, lavender potpourri and green pepper corn. It is very well balanced.
