Too sugary sweet by far, which is partly the result of very high alcohol but may also be due to some residual sugar. The sweetness draws attention to the oak, and makes it taste stronger than it really is. Despite flavors of blackberries, blueberries and mocha, this wine is too Porty and unbalanced.

Super-spicy, offering a blast of white and black pepper, briary blackberry, black cherry sour candy, cola and coffee flavors wrapped into vigorous tannins. Retains the basically rustic nature of Barbera, but it’s one of the better ones out there. Try as a smoother alternative to Zinfandel.

A little too sweet, with a candied taste of sugared cherries, blackberries and cola, and a dash of caramel. Other than that the tannins are very fine.

A tough, gritty wine not offering much richness. It’s very dry and quite acidic, and the modest cherry flavors veer into tobacco, white pepper and sage.

Dark in color, this rosé is a little too heavy and full-bodied, lacking the silky lightness you want in a blush. A blend of Nebbiolo and Syrah, it has flavors of cherries and red currants.

With inviting Dr. Pepper-like aromas, this Terra d’Oro Deaver Vineyard wine is structured like a building, with lots of savory layers over sweet. It’s big alcohol-content wise at 15.5% but is a good example of Deaver’s intriguing blend of power and finesse.

A beautiful Zinfandel from a winery with lots of know-how. The wine is medium-bodied, with a graceful structure of finely ground tannins that makes it drinkable right away. The flavors are pure mountain Zin, intense in peppery currants, cocoa and licorice.

A dry, tannic Zinfandel from Amador, fairly large production at 14,000 cases a year, with enough blueberry, sweet black olive and spice on the finish to make the whole package a nicely made bottling from a Sierra Foothills Zin specialist.

The first duty of a Port-style wine is to be dazzlingly rich and sweet yet balanced in acidity, and this bottling is all that. Waves of blackberry jam, cassis and dark chocolate are brightened with zesty acidity, and the sweetness level is very high.

The Home Vineyard bottling mixes milk chocolate scents, ripe cherries and streaks of licorice in a pleasing, ripe, full-bodied Zin. There’s a good, tight, tart backbone to the wine, and it’s just a shade less complex than its brother, the SHR Field Blend. —P.G.
