This is Sangiovese-based with a just 3% Canaiolo, exhibiting modern, ripe flavors of sweet mocha chocolate, vanilla, cherry and mature blueberry. The nose is sweet smelling and some of that sweetness transfers to the mouth. The wine has a velvety, soft texture and tasty finish.

With 10% Merlot for extra smoothness, this Cabernet Sauvignon has amazing intensity with plum, blackberry, leather, spice bread, clove, chocolate and menthol notes that leap out of the glass. It’s a beautifully harmonious wine with no aromatic element out of place and black fruit and spice flavors that are nicely rounded out by the oak. Soft, yielding and ready to drink now.

Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 10% Merlot create a vibrant wine with beautiful intensity and underlying tones of milk chocolate, prune, blueberry and spice. In the mouth, the wine is still a bit chunky and the tannins raw—you’d best wait to drink it after 2010.

Reticent for a 2001. The nose is leathery, with more smoked meat and tomato than bright fruit. Quite classical in style, blending 70% Sangiovese with 30% Cabernet. Tart cherry and cranberry control the palate, which has a nice center cut of fruit but not a lot of obvious charm. More of a connoisseur’s wine than mainstream juice.

Sangiovese is enhanced with a tiny quota of Canaiolo to produce a traditional-style Chianti Classic with high appeal and drinkability. In measured doses, you’ll recognize black currant, mulberries and slate-like mineral flavors over a cool, fresh finish.

Almond, toast, vanilla bean and other oak-related aromas drive the nose of this vibrant Riserva from one of the most beautiful estates in Radda-in-Chianti. The wine has good harmony in the mouth where the natural fruit shines through and is powered by the wine’s smooth structure and polished tannins.

Closed but a little spicy, with hints of cola, damp leather and coffee. Modest in its force, with cherry and citrus creating a fresh, zesty palate feel. Stays mostly in the middle of the road, with supple tannins and a modest finishing flavor of root beer.

Saddle leather and dried spices mark the nose, while the flavors run toward black cherries and cedar. It feels a little light in the mouth, finshing crisp and tart.

Interesting bouquet, with early lactic notes giving way to blueberry and then sawdust, root beer and finally Christmas spice. A bit flat on the palate, but still pushing lively rasp berry and strawberry flavors. Tight on the finish, with lively acidity and fierce tannins.

The bouquet is round and friendly, with a full offering of cherry. The palate follows suit, delivering some earth alongside cherry and strawberry. The finish is equally friendly, and not ponderous or heavy. From start to finish it flows without flaws, even if it never quite rises to a higher status. —M.S.
