Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A strained wine with resiny aromas. It smells grainy, wheaty and might just be oaked. Whatever the case, this is not an appealing wine. It lacks varietal aromas, flavors and zest. Drinkable but not recommended.

Unusual indeed. The blend is Cabernet, Zinfandel and Shiraz, and frankly it’s a mish-mash of oak, espresso and sour fruit. Extremely lemony, with a fair amount of green. In no way does the fruit stand up to the huge pounding of oak it takes. Out of whack.

Dark and minty, with licorice and cassis aromas that are positive. In the mouth, it’s got Cab’s typical plum and cassis character, and the finish is round and spicy, with a little heat. If only the mouthfeel were less jumpy and more lush, this would be even better. Imported by American Wine Distributors.

From the plant-it-and-blend-it category comes this earthy, chunky, plum-filled red that turns sharp and sour. The finish is gritty and the body too tannic compared to the quality of the fruit.

Aromas of cherries and flowers get it going, followed by sweet flavors of red and black fruit. Nothing in particular stands out in this wine other than its balance and freshness. Ample tannins coat the mouth and there’s a hint of oak on the finish. This is a good Chilean Cab, one that represents the value class well.

Quite woody and minty to begin with. The palate, meanwhile, delivers a shock of berry syrup, something akin to blueberry or boysenberry. Warm and oaky on the finish, but also sweet and cloying. Likable but medicinal. Imported by American Wine Distributors.

Seems like a holdover from a few years ago. A bouquet of hard spice, chemical and tree bark is rustic and lacking in friendly fruit. In the mouth, sweet but cooked plum and cherry flavors are heavy and almost medicinal. Finishes with oaky, burnt marshmallow flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A good but awkward attempt at a bigger, more saturated, more serious wine. The nose tells you that it’s ripe, but there’s some reduction in there too. The palate is revved up and tannic with turbulence along the way. Spice, chocolate and heat all play a part on the berry-driven palate.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
If we’ve tasted a Chilean Sangiovese before, then this doubles our control group. It’s very New World in style, with rich, smoky black fruit aromas leading to a fresh but full-bodied palate. We wouldn’t compare this to Chianti in any way except for the grape. It’s much fruitier, bigger, rounder and ultimately more generic. But it’s still alluring if you’re desperate for something new.

If you temper expectations, this New World Chardonnay will fit the bill. It delivers modest pear and vanilla aromas as well as ample sweetness on the palate, but it has good acidity and balance, thus the creamy, baked marshmallow flavors that often mar Chilean Chard are largely absent. Drink now.
