Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A full-bodied blend of 66% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache and 4% Syrah bled off like a rosé and then fermented like a white wine, very reminiscent of a rosé from Provence. Dry, with prevailing flavors of strawberry and sweet spice, this Vin Gris is both pleasant enough to sip as an apéritif and bold enough to stand next to a range of food, seafood in particular.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The new oak sticks out on this Syrah, with caramel, buttered toast and vanilla dominating the underlying blackberry and cherry fruit. However, the wine is young, and its intensity is obvious. Sometimes these reds don’t show well in youth but develop dramatically in the bottle. Give it until 2011, and try through 2013.

Hang onto your hat; here’s a very great Syrah. The aromas are hiding, now suggesting plum and blackberry, now black pepper, now freshly baked rhubarb pie. In the mouth, it knocks out with grace and power. It’s soft as silk, but complex and layered, and the richly tannic finish suggests aging potential. Not too long, though.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big, tannic and dry Syrah that seems built for the cellar, but an unripe note of green peppercorn verging on bell pepper rules that out. So drink now and appreciate the blackberries and oak.

What an interesting wine. It drinks like it really comes from someplace, which is to say, it has terroir. It smells earthy and peppery, with a perfume of cassis. It’s soft in tannins and acids, but utterly delicious. Hard to exaggerate the lip-smacking quality and fantastic finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Young and oaky now, showing an uncomfortable alliance of sweet vanilla and caramel with intense, primary fruit blackberry and cherry flavors. Syrah’s innate pepper and meatiness offer additional complexities. Ungainly now, but has everything it needs to glide through 2013 while gradually developing nuance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a touch of unripeness in this wine that shows up as a taste of green peppercorn, although it’s very subtle, and the blackberry and black cherry fruit quickly washes it away. Other than that, the wine is dry and rich in tannins. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is one of the few California Syrahs that demands time in the cellar. Its tough tannins form an aloof astringency that makes it virtually undrinkable now, but it has an incredible core of blackberry, black currant and dark chocolate fruit. Peppery, anise, leather and spice notes, in addition to slightly caramelized vanillins from 100% new oak, impart great complexity. Best 2012 and beyond.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This successful blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre satisfies for its complete ripeness and fine structure. It’s pleasantly rich in blackberry, black cherry pie filling, cola, anise, pepper and sandalwood flavors that last a long time on the spicy finish.

Awkward. Even though the oak is described as “slghtly used,” the wine is dominated by smoky caramel and vanilla aromas and flavors. Underneath are flavors of pineapples, pears and peaches.
