Aromas of stone fruits, particularly apricot, are light but nice. The palate offers lightweight lemon and tangerine, while the finish is dry and simple. Nicely textured but a bit weak on flavor.

This easy Vernaccia exhibits a very pale color and measured aromas of almond skin, pear, melon and white flowers. It is lean and watery in the mouth with a pinch of grapefruit-like acidity.

Lean and almost citrusy on the nose, with some green notes as well. Spicy but thin, with cherry and chocolate flavors in front of a lively, high-pitched finish.

Said to be the favorite après-sculpturing drink of Michelangelo, Vernaccia is one of Italy’s oldest natives grapes. This version from a 235-acre vineyard near Tuscany’s famed “city of towers” is not aromatically intense but it does offer nice melon and floral tones. Tart and flinty in the mouth. You get the impression this was a hot year thanks to the ripe cantaloupe, pineapple fruit tart and wood notes. But mineral tones and sour grapefruit astringency manage to break free in the mouth. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.

This is a vibrant blend of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Chardonnay, Malvasia and Vermentino with fresh aromas of kiwi, Golden Delicious apple, pear and toasted nut. There’s a touch of mint or peppermint at the back and the wine is crisp, clean and fresh in the mouth.

Colorful, bold and sweet smelling, with hay, butterscotch and peach on the uncommon nose. More of a big-boned wine with ripe, intriguing apple, almond, lemon and butter flavors. Finishes smooth, with background notes of vanilla and citrus pith. Based on Vernaccia, with other grapes blended in.

Peperino is an informal blend of Sangiovese and Merlot with bright, clean berry nuances and mild shadings of spice and herb. There’s a Mediterranean quality to this wine that helps it pair with most Italian, Greek or Spanish meat dishes.

Floral and almond scents on the nose, along with stone fruits—Queen Anne cherries? Sharp, almost bitter on the palate and into the finish, which is tart and shows good length.
