Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
VMR stands for Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne, which are blended together in this flamboyantly floral version of a Rhône-style white. Apricot, melon and citrus flavors strike the palate with a lush, almost oily impression, yet finish long and crisp. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine inspired some debate in the tasting room, others appreciating it more than I did. Made by Ben Riggs, a winemaker who certainly knows his way around Shiraz-Viogniers. The aromas are very sweet, with raspberry and blueberry holding court. The flavor? Blueberry jam. Tastes low in acid, but its 15% alcohol is no surprise. Imported by Epicurean Wines.

The Black Chook Shiraz-Viognier - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Winemaker Ben Riggs coferments the Shiraz with Viognier skins in an attempt to build in additional complexity at a reasonable price, and this wine delivers lovely blackberry, licorice, stone fruit and black tea-leaf notes as a result, ending with a touch of coffee. Drink now.
