Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A wine that evolves through a few phases while in the glass, each more odd than the last. Starts off with a sold berry-and cream profile, straightforward and accessible. With time, the nose turns tomato-y, and the palate bubblegum-sweet, then a little green. Well made, but odd.

Aromas are of roasted fruits; on the palate, it has a dark, oaky underlay offset by sourish red fruit. Straightforward. 1,900 cases produced.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Like the other white wines in Malthus’s Australian portfolio, this blends in a touch of Eden Valley Riesling to add acidity rather than simply adding tartaric. The result in this case is a broad, plump wine with hints of pear and clove, finishing with additional spice on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and even a tiny bit of Muscadelle, this is perfumed and floral on the nose, but it also boasts scents of cinnamon, coffee, chocolate and earth. It’s lush and dense on the palate, rich and creamy in weight and texture, ending with hints of vanilla and spice. Approachable now, but should drink well for up to 10 years.

The Colonial Estate Red Blend - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A single-vineyard wine that contains about 85% Shiraz, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache, this is an incredibly concentrated wine. Slightly lifted aromas keep it from seeming heavy, but the flavors are dense and fudge-like, chocolaty and superripe. Dusty tannins on the finish suggest cellaring through 2010, and it should age well through at least 2020.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A round, corpulent style of Chardonnay, nutty and rich but balanced by crisp apple and citrus notes. A bit of Eden Valley Riesling provides the wine’s freshness.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Perfumed and floral at first, but this wine also features some deeper, darker notes of black pepper and black olive. It’s plenty rich on the palate, oozing with earth and cola flavors that stay lively through the finish. Drink now–2015.

From the same vineyard that provides fruit for John Duval’s Plexus, this is a blend of approximately 50% Grenache, 30% Shiraz and 20% Mourvèdre. There’s a slightly lifted, vinyl quality to the aromas on first nosing, but once accustomed to it, it’s no longer bothersome, leaving the way open for chocolate, cherry and cola flavors. Coffee and spice notes mark the supple finish. Drink now–2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Like a couple of other Colonial Estate 2005s, this has a lifted nose that flirts with volatile vinyl and acetone scents, then settles down to deliver spice and chocolate. This is really fudge-like and dense, picking up hints of pepper on the finish along with some dusty tannins. Should be long-lived for Australian Grenache; drink now–2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine delivers plenty of honey and peach notes upfront, then closes with lime and mineral notes from the tiny proportion of Eden Valley Riesling that’s been blended in. Crisp and steely.
