When you see the price on this wine-in-a-box, you’re amazed. How do they make it so ripe, rich and delectable, at this price? Beats me. But it’s just delicious in fruity flavor, and puts to shame many Cabs that cost far more.

What do you get at this price in a 1-liter jug? Plenty of pleasure. Sure, this isn’t a dazzlingly rich Pinot, but it’s clean, varietally true, and superdrinkable.

From Three Thieves, who are establishing a reputation for value, comes this Cab, a blend of four coastal counties from Paso Robles to Dry Creek. It’s ripe, soft and easy, with blackberry, chocolate, mint and vanilla flavors.

This squat one-liter bottle is not your average jug wine. Au contraire, it’s produced by three iconoclastic vintners who like to rock the boat: Charles Bieler, Joel Gott and Roger Scommegna, the three thieves who call themselves the “liberators of fine wine.” This wine, made from a blend of Napa Valley and Lodi grapes, kicks off with pretty cherry and earth tones in the nose. On the palate, it’s bright-edged, with tangy acidity to support blackberry, spice, cherry, smoke and licorice flavors. And with 33% more wine in the jug than in a traditional 750-ml bottle, Three Thieves is a steal.
