The best rosé of the year? Could be. It’s difficult to review a wine that you just want to slug down, it’s so good. Gorgeous color, smooth, fresh, ripe, mixed stone fruits across a lush palate, and a clean entry and exit.

This is tight when first opened, with a hard-edged herbal character. Beneath that shell are richer, tropical fruit flavors of ripe banana, yellow apple and a hint of papaya; and with plenty of breathing time the wine softens and opens out. Roughly two thirds of the barrels were new French oak; and that is still being resolved into the fruit. This wine has a good 6–8 years of life ahead of it, but if you are drinking it now, decant it.

Rich, almost unctuous, with a lush, lanolin mouthfeel, this is a passionfruit creamsicle of a wine. The fruit is a seductive and generous mix of peach, Asian pear and tropical; the alcohol a full-bodied 14.5%. The Roussanne part (58% of the blend) is barrel fermented; the Viognier done in stainless. Blended together they harmonize beautifully.

From a hard-edged vintage, this Bordeaux blend is just beginning to open up, but has a firm structure and a steely spine. The aromas are strongly varietal, with a mix of fresh herbs and sharp tannins. The fruit is subtle, black cherry and cassis, threaded with smoke.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Made from 100% Celilo vineyard fruit (though it is not stated on the label), this has a fine texture, from frequent battinage and sur lie aging. The aromatics suggest apples, pears, hints of honey and toast; it has a very polished and elegant mouthfeel, truly Burgundian. Flavors revolve around apple, Asian pear and melon, with finishing hints of buttered popcorn.

Crisp and bright, with a detailed mix of spring herbs and citrus fruits. The powerful acidity and a hint of mineral running through the finish adds to the depth. This just keeps on going, clean and satisfying.

The tart, strawberry flavors of Barbera come into balance, amplified with what seems to be a generous amount of new oak, which contributes lovely caramel throughout the finish. Acids and tannins are in proportion, and the cinnamon toast flavors of the finish end harmoniously.

Emblematic of the new direction for Tranche, this pure varietal has power and presence. It gracefully captures the herbaceous aspect of the grape, without sacrificing the deep purple fruit. Fragrant on entry, though the tannins are still a little hard and chewy. Balanced and complex.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A delicious wine, with pretty, pure Syrah flavors of blackberry fruit slathered in coffee liqueur and caramel toast. It’s a wine that can only be called yummy; but it has muscle and verve and does not over-reach for super ripeness. All in proportion, with interesting streaks of licorice and smoke running through the lingering finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Packed in a big, heavy, hefty glass bottle, and showing a generous amount of toasty, chewy oak, this is a substantial, tannic red wine with a long life ahead. Fruit flavors are dense and dark; the tannins grainy and ripe, with smoke and espresso and a bit of black olive threaded all through.
