Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Big, juicy, and interesting. Goes beyond the plummy, meaty flavors to include a complex melange of dried herb and floral notes. Feels smooth in the mouth, but there are some big, dusty tannins that will provide a good foil for lamb or veal dishes. A new brand from the talented young Rhone-oriented winemaker at Treana.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Treana has enjoyed great success with this blend of Viognier and Marsanne, which is one of the best Rhône-style white wines in California. The main reason is the source of the grapes. The vineyard, owned by the Wagners of Caymus, is stellar. The ’06 is as rich and crisply acidic as ever, with fantastically complex, honeyed tropical fruit, apricot and floral flavors that taste like they have a touch of botrytis.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
You notice this wine’s unctuousness from the glycerine that stains the glass. The aromas are closed, suggesting dark stone fruits. In the mouth, tannins mask a core of berry fruit. Acidity is low and makes the wine seem a little flabby. A blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot and Mourvèdre.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This appealing wine from Paso Robles has well-ripened plum, blackberry, cassis and herb flavors, and a smoothly elegant texture. It is very dry, and those warm southland tannins are sweet and smooth. Finishes with some astringency. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Drier, tarter and more minerally than usual, this elegant Viognier-Marsanne blend comes from a vineyard in the northern part of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Despite the warmth of the vintage, the wine is bone dry and quite acidic, but very complex in Meyer lemon zest, vanilla and honey flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, it’s sourced from the western side of Paso, which is the cooler, better side. A great deal of new French oak was put on. The result is promising. It’s a full-bodied, dry wine, firm in dusty tannins, and with pronounced blackberry and cola flavors. A wine to watch.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark, thick, ripe and juicy, this is a big mouthful of Syrah that calls for roasts or similar fare. It’s very dry, with blackberry, plum and peppery flavors and a tasty overlay of oak. Notable for the smooth ripeness of its rich, sweet tannins, and might even improve for a few years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This eccentric blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Sangiovese achieves unusual finesse and complexity for a Paso Robles red wine. The aromas are of indeterminate wild berries, cassis, oak, and mint. Tastes very rich, dry and ripe, with gorgeous, sweet fruit, cocoa and spice. Tannins are soft and plump.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Treana has established this as one of the top Rhône whites in California. The ’03 is an amazing wine. It displays the fresh, keen acidity of the vineyard, which grows no reds, and detonates on the palate with tremendous apricot, papaya, mango, pineapple, tangerine, peach and mineral flavors. It’s basically dry, although there’s a touch of botrytis honey.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This dark golden wine is extremely rich and full bodied, with a thick, glyceriney texture. It has strong flavors of peaches, apricots, citrus, vanilla and a caramelly, crème brûlée taste, almost like a late-harvest wine, but it’s bone dry.
