A monumental Cabernet that succeeds on every level. It’s deep, dark and ultrarich, showing massive blackberries, black currants, dark chocolate, violets, minerals and a touch of sweet, smoky oak. Beyond the flavors is the dramatic structure, with fabulously ripe, dense tannins and a bone-dry, long finish. Surely a tremendous wine capable of long-term aging. Try 2012–2018, at least.

With hefty acidity, this crisp, zesty wine is bone dry, as the label says. Made Alsatian-style, it has tart green apple, peach, floral and mineral flavors. A wine of great charm and delicacy, and one of the top Rieslings of the vintage.

This is a sharp, tannic, astringent Cabernet, loaded with what smells like new oak, and the question is, Will it age? The wine is not nearly as lush or opulent as many, if not most, of its Napa colleagues. My hunch is that it will not reward aging.

This is certainly the best, ripest of Trefethen’s current crop of Cabs, but its built along very different lines from more opulent wines further north along Highway 29. It’s surprisingly tough, lean and angular for an ’01, loaded with sharp-elbowed tannins, but it does seem to have the fruity stuffing for the cellar. Hold until at least 2008.

A perennial favorite among those who believe Riesling has a home in California. Floral, dry and crisp, this wine does not suffer from low acidity. Simple and fruity, it overflows with orange rind, honeydew and citrus flavors.

Has fine intensity while remaining elegant. Nose of cedar, tobacco, red fruit and a hint of bay leaf. Solid beam of red-currant and plum flavors. Medium mouthfeel, with a long velvety finish.

In good vintages, Trefethen reserves a special portion of their Chardonnay production for late release in their Library Selection series. This latest offering—one of the oldest wines tasted—shows good balance and creamy, yet still crisp, smoothness. The green apple fruit is still holding well, along with a chalky note and a refreshing lime, herb and flinty tartness reminiscent of Chablis.

Pear, apple and wet stone aromas give way to grapey green flavors similar to herbs, especially mint. This has been more impressive in past years; this vintage seems mildly cloying and the wine just isn’t overly appealing. It’s all too bad, because we like Riesling and support America’s efforts with the grape.

Lush and creamy on the palate, the wine shows great balance of sweetness and acidity, with rich apricot, peach, melon and spice flavors that finish with a glorious, lemony edge. Really delightful.
