Ripely fruity in good Cabernet flavors, with blackberries and cherries spiced with toasty oak. This is a decent, classy wine. Drink now–2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dry and tannic compared to today’s lush, over-the-top Napa style, this Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend hearkens back to the old Inglenook and Martini Cabs, which were ready to drink on release, yet aged for a long time. It’s a lovely wine, with rich cassis, pencil lead and cedar flavors that finish with complexity and elegance. Best now and for a good 10 years or more.

Interesting to taste beside the winery’s 2000 Lewelling Cabernet, with which it shares much in common. But this Meritage is a little more tannic and has a broader and more interesting range of flavors. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very ripe and extracted, with flavors ranging from white peaches to tropical fruits. Acidity is crisp and refreshing, and there’s a lot of oak-induced notes, including smoke, vanilla, toast and sweet tannins. Yummy, but one-dimensional.

A fine Cabernet from Sutter Home’s upscale line, it shows its pedigree with rich, complex flavors of blackcurrant and sweet olive. The oaky shadings are perfect, and the finish is pure and tasty. Delicious drinking.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pretty and plump, with cherry, root beer, coffee and creamy, smoky nuances from oak. Feels big, heavy and full, in a pleasantly rich way, but a bit raw in acids. Need a few years to settle down.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lots of charry oak and lees give this wine notes of vanilla, sour cream and a smooth texture, but the flavors are pretty thin. They veer toward citrus fruits, with a sprinkling of oregano and dill. It’s so austere, dry and tart, it’s almost Chablisian.
