A big wine bursting with the wildest of brambly berry flavors, and a peppery, herbal hint of earth and wood. The tannins are smooth and dusty. It’s a nice bit of winemaking, but a little too big and uncontrolled for its britches. —S.H.

Carneros isn’t ideal for Cabernet, as it’s too cool. Even in this hot vintage, Truchard’s ’04 bottling has an unripe, vegetal streak beside the cassis, chocolate and new oak flavors.

An elegant wine with lovely raspberry and cherry fruit, seasoned with a touch of tobacco and chocolate. The wraparound finish is long and vivid.

A big, buttery Chard, brimming with ripe apple tart, cinnamon and smoky flavors. Bright and acidic, feels clean in the mouth, packing plenty of flavor. Pleasant apple and spice flavors linger on the finish.

Packs plenty of powerful complexity into a dry wine that’s a pretty good price. Made in full-Burgundian style, with barrel fermentation and lees aging, it’s a rich, creamy wine packed with spicy tropical fruit and honeysuckle flavors. Try as an interesting alternative to an upscale Chardonnay.

Soft, silky and direct in its appeal, this has rich flavors of raspberries, cherries, cola, vanilla and woodspice. It’s a good wine that would benefit from additional layers of complexity.

Not quite as ripe as previous vintages, with an earthy, herbal edge, but that works to the wine’s advantage, highlighting its elegance and class. Smooth, smoky oak frames the blackberry and currant flavors. Should develop bottle complexity over the next 6–8 years.

The cool climate of Carneros has worked in favor of Truchard’s Syrah, giving it a superb structure and a peppery richness. Under the smooth tannins, you’ll find a burst of black and red currant with a savory spiciness that pleasantly stimulates the palate. Drink soon.

Truchard’s Pinots have been a disappointment the last several years, and despite the greatness of the ’05 vintage, this bottling is lean and herbal, almost vegetal. It’s a very dry, light-bodied wine, with flavors of cherries, cola and mint.
