Certainly not the most complex Syrah you’ll encounter, but it has meaty, strong, dark fruit, adequate spice, and lots of forceful acids that push the package.

Deep berry fruit, sweet perfume and beyond average complexity. From an excellent vintage, it offers violets on the nose and a sweet, rich body. A no-brainer among under-$10 reds.

More oak than balance, and the fruit seems tart. Grippy tannins and racy acids create a tougher than usual mouthfeel, and overall the flavors just aren’t that exciting. Good enough, but better to stick with the Malbec.

A big blast of oak rises up from the glass, a barrier to what fruit might lie below. Once you get to the palate, there’s tight but somewhat tart raspberry and a touch of leather. Not nearly as ripe and rich as the oak on the nose calls for; thus the end result is almost sour, which isn’t an attribute when it comes to Malbec.

Although it kicks off on the stewy, baked side of the fence, airing reveals good fruit and ample wood; indeed, there’s brandied cherry, vanilla and chocolate to ponder. Long on the finish, albeit a finish that’s one-note simple. A little stark in terms of feel.

Lightweight in its approach, but still sturdy. The bouquet offers melon, tropical notes and white flowers, while the palate deals mostly cantaloupe and banana. A modestly oaked wine without a ton of stuffing. Good for basic sipping. Imported by Billington Imports.

This clean, fresh, racy Malbec from the Catena family of wineries hails from an elevated section of Mendoza. The palate features zippy cherry and red plum fruit, while the finish is dry, properly oaky and smooth. The acid-driven fruit successfully fights through any overt wood or tannins, providing newcomers a nice introduction to Malbec.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From high-altitude vineyards near the Andes comes this earthy, muscle-bound Merlot. It features bright cherry fruit and a hint of green pepper, but only a hint (it is ripe). The finish is mostly oak, but with drying, full tannins and a firm grip, it can handle that woodiness. A touch of barnyard renders it out of the ordinary, which is better than being dull and generic.

This Catena brand starts off light and leafy before gathering its legs and emitting a full blast of charcoal oak. The cherry and raspberry flavors flow on the medium-bodied palate, with chewy black fruit and chocolate appearing late on the finish. Although nothing in particular stands out, it’s yet another solid Argentinean Cab for the cost-conscious shopper.
