Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Opens with a bright, clean burst of red cherry pie, with teases of wintergreen, clove tea and smoky oak. This inviting aroma leads to an elegant, balanced mouthfeel, rich in dusty tannins and complex cherry, coffee and grilled mushroom flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A fine Cabernet from this veteran producer, elegant and stylish. Not one of your fruit bombs, it shows modulated blackberry, currant and herb flavors, leading to a long, spicy finish. Really distinguished, although it’s not an ager. Contains a splash of Syrah and Petite Sirah for complexity and color.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With a fair degree of new French oak, this lovely wine has a toasty, cedary edge that meshes well with the underlying fruit. Small amounts of Syrah, Cab Franc and Merlot bring a lighter, red cherry note to Cab’s deeper, darker blackberries and currants. Very stylish and sophisticated wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Plenty of ripe, jammy blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate and smoky oak flavors on this dry, full-bodied wine. High alcohol shows up in the form of chile pepper heat, and the mouthfeel is a little flabby. Seems unbalanced. Try cellaring, but no guarantees. Tasted twice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s plenty of dark appeal in this Napa wine with blackberry, smoke and toasty oak aromas and flavors. Leather and bitter chocolate show on the medium-full, even palate, but the oak comes on terrifically strong there and through the finish, rendering the wine rather narrow. Still, it’s not without appeal, and will be well-liked by the many fans of the black, oaky style.

Rich and round on the palate, with apricot, lemon, melon, spice and herb notes at the fore. Long and bright at the end.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, with a hodgepodge of seven other varieties, this is a fun wine, but it’s also sophisticated and complex. Bone dry, it’s smooth in the mouth, with earthy, berry flavors and hints of lavender and anise.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This controversial wine attracted a great range of scores among the tasters. Several found it overoaked and astringent, while others liked it for its fruity flavors and firm texture. It is young and backward now, and will probably improve with a few years in the cellar.

Turnbull Petite Sirah - 2001

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A pretty good wine, soft and appealing in blackberry fruit and oak, with refined tannins. Doesn’t have the dramatic power of the Turnbull Cabs of the 90s, and unlikely to age. From the estate vineyard in Oakville.

Firm and drily tannic now. There’s a green mintiness that suggests against longterm aging, but enough blackberry and oak to be pleasing.
