If you’re a Petite Sirah fan you’ll love the richness and power of this one, from an appellation in Lake County. It’s dry and softly tannic, and notable for an explosion of blackberries, cassis, plums, chocolate, anise, black pepper and sandalwood.

If your tolerance for alcohol and volatility is high, you may like this more than we did. One of our tasters found it round, soft and harmonious, while the other two disapproved of its heat and and volatile acidity.

Soft and sweetly gentle, this everyday wine has likeable flavors of black cherries, raspberries, chocolate, dates and black pepper. Blend is Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah.

This is from Hook & Ladder, the new project from former DeLoach owner Cecil DeLoach. The grapes come from a new appellation in Lake County, grown at an altitude of more than 2,000 feet. The wine is dense in citrus rind, gooseberry and honeysuckle flavors, and absolutely dry, with very crisp acids. It shows lots of flair and complexity.
