Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A hard wine to like, although it’s clean and without technical flaws. Tastes very oaky now, with hard grapeskin and oak tannins giving an astringency to the superripe blackberry and cherry jelly flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rather heavy and full-bodied for a blush wine, with a dark color and considerable weight in the mouth. The raspberry, cherry and vanilla flavors are tasty, but the wine lacks the airy lightness and elegance you want in a good rosé.

Tastes its best now, with jammy blackberry, cherry and raspberry flavors, and a rich overlay of oak. The tannins and acids are soft and gentle.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Feels dry and rustic in the mouth, with astringent tannins and acidity cutting across flavors of blackberry and cherry jam, red currants, licorice and pepper. Best now, with a brief decant.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Good, rich notes in this blackberry, currant, dark chocolate, roasted meat and black pepper flavored wine, with its firm tannins. Loses points for excessive softness and heat, which gives it a rustic feel. Drink now.

Ty Caton Syrah - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Too soft for comfort. Lacks structural integrity and lively acidity to balance out the rich blackberry, currant, anise and cocoa flavors, and there’s peppery heat from high alcohol. Drink now.

Ty Caton Petite Sirah - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fruity, dry and immediately appealing, showing ripe raspberry, cherry, blackberry, cola, licorice, bacon and sandalwood flavors. Could use greater complexity, especially at this price. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Malbec.

Ty Caton Red Blend - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a strongly flavored young wine. There’s nothing subtle about the blast of blackberries, cherries and currants, of the sweet, smoky oak. The tannins are pronounced, giving a dusty astringency in the mouth. Should develop for 2–4 years.

This Bordeaux-Rhône blend is rustic and dry, with significant tannins. It has earthy, herb, berry and spice flavors that finish with a touch of bitterness.
