Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A barrique-fermented blend of Verdicchio and Chardonnay, Le Busche is the kind of wine you’ll want to serve with roast turkey or lasagna with crusty melted cheese. Its color is solid gold and notes of banana, vanilla, yellow apple and exotic spice create an ensemble that is steady enough to pair with hearty dishes.

There are only a few pockets of vineyard land in Italy with the correct levels of fog or moisture for noble rot (botrytis) and the Marche is one of them. But 2003 was a sweltering hot year and as a result this Sauvignon-based dessert wine lacks its characteristic intensity. You do get apricot, peach and honey over the wine’s lean consistency and there’s a slightly sour taste on the finish.

Very ripe notes of berry fruit and cherry liqueur appear on the nose of this ruby colored blend of hearty Montepulciano and delicate Sangiovese. The wine is thin and compact and offers cherry flavors on the end.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a thick, brooding Montepulciano with deep concentration and well-balanced notes of blackberry, plum, prunes and Turkish spice. The wine has inky black consistency covered by oak flavors and long black fruit on the close. It’s big in the mouth but not on the wallet.

Here is a golden-tinged wine that demonstrates the aging potential of Verdicchio. A third of the blend undergoes fermentation in oak and this extra step adds pretty vanilla and toasted notes that work well with the wine’s natural minerality. Imported by Bedford International.

Here’s a creamy and elegant Verdicchio from old vines that offers an array of aromatic highlights that includes stone fruit, melon, almond and a touch of chopped green herb. It leaves a positive impression in the mouth thanks to its bright, fruity flavors, solid structure and spicy finish.

Here’s a wine to look out for (in pretty packaging too) if you want to impress your friends with a selection from a little-known region of Italy that is ripe with enological potential. The aromatic layers here are generous and intense: You’ll get loads of red fruit, leather, tar and menthol flavors.

Here’s a cheerful and approachable Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with a genuine approach that emphasizes fruit quality. The variety is naturally rustic, deep and rich in flavors and color. It also has cooling freshness that works nicely with its thick texture.

You can smell the summer heat here in the form of ripe berries, strawberries, blackberry and spice. This luscious Conero (from central Italy) boasts thick, dark concentration and an impenetrable appearance. The mouthfeel is tonic and tart with lingering oak notes on the close.

Pear, Golden Delicious apple, natural smoke and mineral form a fine, elegant whole. Verdicchio has natural creaminess and the plush consistency of this wine demonstrates this fact. Pair it with pork, poultry or pasta.
