Piercing and reduced, with cherry and red currant flavors. Quite tannic and acidic, with a tough personality. But the overall take remains positive and the wine seems healthy and live-wire. Sharp, with harsh, reduced aromas of tar, rhubarb and molasses. A lot of heavy plum and berry flavors raise hopes, but in the end it’s just not that thrilling. Authentic, however. Imported by Table 31 Imports.

Funky, with earthy, heavy aromas. Seems a bit rubbery and peppery, with cola, plum and olive flavors. Tannic, too. Not nearly as fruity, clean, ripe and pleasing as the 2001.

Full and smoky, with a broad bouquet of bacon, earth and black fruit. The palate is nicely balanced between aggressive acidity and lush blackberry and cherry fruit. Exceedingly long and fresh on the finish; shows its quality from the first sip and holds it all the way through. Imported by Table 31 Imports.

Complex, with all sorts of aromas, flavors and textures coming from every direction. The color is lighter and the feel more delicate than many; and the flavors are pure cherry and chocolate, while the finish is long, minty and echoing some of the barrels it once saw. Drink now–2008.

Dark fruit, tobacco and leathery spice make for a nice bouquet. Tight and forceful in the mouth, with ripe black fruit and firm tannins. Chocolate and espresso come on toward the finish of this thorough, flavorful wine. Satisfying but not a spectacle.

Quite rustic smelling, with hickory smoke, barbecue sauce, spice and cola aromas. Like most Cigales wines, it has a firm tannic bite and a grating mouthfeel. But the flavors of roast berry, black plum and savory marinade is good and par for the course. Drink now.

This small-lot Tempranillo is the best wine from this producer that I’ve come across. It’s full, dark and pure, with bold berry and black plum aromas. It’s on the verge of overripe but brings things back to lush, raisiny and flavorful due to just-right acidity. Best if you like thick, chunky, weighty reds with flesh and richness. Drink now through 2012; 75 cases produced.

Pine needle, cedar plank and forest floor define the mature nose, while the full, grabby, tannic palate is loaded with likable cola, black fruit and chocolate flavors. Ripe, pure, rich and tannic, with some bite, burn and ruggedness. Drinkable now but needs food to cut the tannins.
