Thickly extracted and inky black in appearance, this is a dense and impenetrable expression of Sangiovese Grosso. The wine’s aromas include dusty earth, tar, licorice, resin and dried currant berry. Be careful when pairing this wine: its power could overwhelm delicate food flavors. Try it with succulent steak or aged cheese.

This wine is surprisingly accessible for a 1997 Brunello, which is both its attraction and its failing. It lacks the power of many wines of this vintage, but has generous ripe fruit and dry tannins that balance well. A medium-term wine. Drink after seven or eight years.

Plush and modern, plump and decadent: this is a blockbuster Brunello with huge concentration, density and intensity especially where those oak-related aromas are concerned. Yes, you get loads of spice and mesquite wood here but the natural intensity of the cherry and blackberry is not overwhelmed. The wine is soft, chewy and dense in the mouth. Drink after 2014.

Full-force and also full of new oak. The nose deals charcoal, cola and root beer, while the palate offers blackberry and sweet cherry flavors. This one is extracted and rich, and while it lacks some edginess and foundation, overall it’s a very nice wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Inkjet black and super concentrated, the wine actually delivers fresh fruit and squeezed berry youthfulness. By the looks of it, you’d expect a massive, oaked, tannic beast, but instead are treated to a wine full of creamy coffee and velvety tobacco leaf flavors. Imported by Vinifera Imports.

Here’s a dark and well concentrated Brunello Riserva with meaty tones of smoked ham or bresaola backed by black cherry and prune. You’ll get loads of leather and tobacco and the wine is bright and tart on the close with a fresh fruit finale. Excellent.

Madonna del Piano Riserva’s rich elements of barbecue smoke and spice add background nuances to black fruit and mature cherry. But what really sets this Brunello apart is the smoothness of its silky texture.

Pitch black, like midnight on a country road. Talk about saturated: the nose yields tar, char and more, and in the mouth it has that midlevel intensity that many of the 2000s don’t have. Earthy at one moment, polished the next. It finishes with a sweet blast of molasses, black cherry and coffee. A head-turner, one that gets better with every sip. Imported by Vinifera Imports.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fresh asphalt, burning timber, bitter chocolate, and anything else that connotes “darkness” is what this heavyweight is about. And as rough as that may sound aromatically, on the palate it’s polished like a gemstone, with just enough grit and guts to push it forward. The fruit, meanwhile, is sensational, a panoply of black plums and cherries infused with cocoa and vanilla. This offers a clear look into 21st-century Brunello, and the picture is breathtaking. Imported by Vinifera Imports.

Rich and complex with a long aging future ahead, this beautiful Brunello from Valdicava offers tight, crisp acidity, solid tannins and a bouquet that is richly packed with black fruit, cherry, spice and tobacco aromas. Pair this wine with succulent cuts of beef.
