A little mute on the nose, with hints of chewing gum. A mouth of peach and melon with offsetting spice is nice, but the texture runs soft. Dried citrus notes come on late, and overall it’s full-flavored yet slightly rubbery.

This vintage was hailed throughout Italy as being one of the best of the 20th century, so what went wrong here? The caramel, toffee and raisin nose is much like Sherry. The raisiny palate indicates overripeness, and despite some tannins, there isn’t much structure or pulse.

Simple and open, with a touch of vanilla to the pear-driven nose. Sweet apple defines the hefty palate, while it finishes long and lasting. If there’s a fault, it’s that it comes across fat, with too much papaya and banana. But mostly it’s satisfying.
