A single-vineyard Sangiovese from Piccini’s top estate, Poggio Teo offers up aromas of black tea and anise balanced by flavors of black fruit. It’s smooth in the mouth, but not particularly lush, finishing with plenty of juicy acidity.

Looking brown around the edges, this wine is showing decline at an age when a good riserva should be hitting full stride. The fruit is stylishly sweet, but attenuated, and past its best in this pretty, older wine. Fading elegance, but why at just past five years of age?

Smooth and minty, with aromas of cedar, cherry and milk chocolate. Definitely a fresh and racy offering, as citrus and cherry mix with leather and chocolate to create a classic Chianti flavor profile. Neither modern nor old fashioned; this is what most folks are seeking.

A raw, tight, ready wine with a spot of green on the nose along with leather and damp earth. Airing freshens it up, revealing berry fruit flavors with accents of soy. Crisp on the finish, with acids at work.

Here’s a brooding but sophisticated Sangiovese (with 10% Merlot) with aromas of black fruit, licorice, cola, plum, resin and road tar. It’s a chewy, dense wine from Castelnuovo Berardenga with good concentration and a luscious, soft texture.
