Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells like a wet dog along with funk and candied berry fruit. Tastes better and more clean, with sweet black cherry and dark plum flavors. There’s even a dusting of chocolate to the finish. Kind of unstable and sweaty but not bad for a $10 Rioja.

An easygoing but nicely made Rioja that delivers purity, good fruit, body and feel. The nose is all cherry and berry, and it’s a clear step up from your everyday red wine. The palate is medium bodied, with tasty, spicy flavors of cherry and raspberry. Lasting on the finish, with proper texture throughout.

Young and vibrant, but also medicinal and gangly. Dark as night and all black fruit on the palate, but also tannic, grabby and rubbery. Toasted on the finish, which simmers just short of being fiery.

Bursts with bright, linear cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors, but it’s not caustic, sharp or grating. Acidity at peak power yields a zesty, racy personality while a blanket of vanilla flavor softens the cherry and raspberry fruit. Crisp and a good food wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For an ’04 reserva, this wine is more edgy, grabby and high in acid than expected. The nose shows old world leather, spearmint and smoked meat more than vibrant fruit, yet the palate is tangy, citric and tastes of red raspberry and plum. Slightly more creamy on the finish, but still it remains scratchy.

Soft in acids and tannins and limpid in the mouth, but could use a bit more fruity flavor on top of the tobacco and sage notes. Would be nice with a big paella.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Murky and leathery at first, with spice, stewed meat and herbal aromas. Chunky but mostly in balance. The thick palate offers baked plum and black raspberry, while the finish is full and earthy. Best with tapas, ideally chorizo. Imported by Esser Wines, Ltd.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full and fresh, with pungent leather, tobacco and red-fruit aromas. On the mark in terms of feel, with laudable plum, cherry and earth-like flavors. Entirely holes-free, with ripeness that matches the wine’s smooth texture.

Starts with a big, dusty nose of cherry, blackberry and forest notes. Fresh and proper on the palate, with plum and boysenberry. Finishes with vanilla and toffee, while the feel is warm and round. Very functional and moderately complex.
