A rock-solid gran reserva with tobacco, tomato leaf, pepper and lovely dried fruit aromas. The palate is round and comfortable, with tobacco, baked fruit and brown sugar flavors. Pure and silky on the finish, with length. Excellent aged Rioja with a more traditional character than many of the new-wave wines are showing.

A big, dark, modern wine with lemon and shoe polish on the nose but also rich black fruit aromas. The palate is both elegant and beefy, with lush blackberry and copious spice and chocolate flavors. Finishes full, mossy, rich and slightly herbal. A big success for varietal Rioja Grenache; drink now through 2012.

A snappy, high-acid wine that pulses with red fruit aromas and flavors. It’s sheering, which is normal for the Graciano variety, but it also tastes nice while delivering a bolt of raspberry and red plum flavor. Oak comes up late, providing a counterweight of vanilla and dry spice. Nice but like all varietal Gracianos, it’s sharp and limited.

Nice Rioja from a bad vintage. The nose shows cumin, leather and dry fruit. It rates more traditional in style than modern, with strawberry, raspberry and vanilla flavors. A little brown sugar and rooty tobacco carries the finish. Drink now to catch a sampling of classic Rioja.

A more traditional type of crianza with vanilla, spice, dry berry fruit and a quiet, subtle approach. The mouthfeel is Old World with it’s clean, dusty weight and proper acid-tannin balance, and the flavors of spice, cherry, dried currant and earth don’t overstep their place. Very nice wine for under $20.

A smooth and wholesome Rioja for the everyday price of $12? Valserrano has delivered just that with this superpleasant, sophisticated wine that’s just complex enough for Spain lovers but also simple enough for the masses who just want an excellent red wine. Raspberry, plum, cherry and spice are plentiful on the nose and palate, while the finish is both clean and cleansing, meaning it’s flavorful and long, but also fresh enough to go with food.

Woodsy at first, then more foresty and stretched. The nose is peppery and light on fruit, while the palate shows tight cherry and raspberry flavors alongside edgy, invigorating tannins and acidity. A lively wine with bite and modest offsetting sweetness to the overriding snap.

90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano; Cask-aged for 24 months in 50/50 French/American Oak; 12 months in the bottle. Nice aged, red fruit on the nose and mouth with spices; nice, smooth tannins after aeration. Terrific Spanish red. $25
