Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With each successive vintage, winemaker Gus Janeway has slowly but surely moved this wine to 100% Malbec. It’s a bold step, because pure varietal wines do not have the advantage of filling in holes with blending. But for those who want to glimpse the future of Malbec in southern Oregon, this is a touch point. Delicate, balanced, herbal, mixing a wash of light fruits with nuances of herb, this very drinkable wine has appealing delicacy and verve.

Still quite fresh and loaded with spicy strawberry and melon fruit, this is finished at just 12.5% alcohol. Easy to take a sip and imagine you are in a café on the Côte Azur, scarfing down some fresh calamari.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From one of the most talented winemakers in the Rogue Valley comes this red blend, which could be labeled Malbec, as that is 88% of the blend (the rest is Cabernet Franc). The varietal character comes through nicely, wrapped in toasty oak, with lovely spice highlights around raspberry and Bing cherry fruit. Lively and textural, with a hint of funk.

An affordable blend that is almost 60% Malbec, the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Syrah. It drinks well, smooth and polished, and the rough tannins that can often overtake the fruit in this region have been nicely managed here, pulling the wine into balance. Strawberry and light black cherry, some herb and tar, and good grip for an everyday red.

A new project from Gus Janeway, showcasing his careful and detailed touch with Rogue valley grapes. The blend is 30% malbec, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 12% cab franc and 7% syrah, but rather than being a smorgasbord it is a focused, complex and layered wine that all knits together. Most telling, Janeway has successfully tamed to tough, rugged tannins that are the biggest challenge for southern Oregon reds.
