A wood-dominated wine at the moment, this Syrah from Nils Venge showcases modest blackberry fruit buried under an avalanche of oak-derived toast and cinnamon. Drying on the finish, but might improve with short-term cellaring.

Made in a fruit-forward way, with jammy blackberry, cherry and currant flavors that finish in a swirl of chocolate and spices. It’s a heartily tannic wine for drinking now. Good with slow-cooked meat stews and barbecue. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Charbono and Syrah.

One of the better Sangioveses of the vintage. It’s dry and silky, with cherry, cola, currant and sandalwood flavors, and a spicy finish. Easy to drink, and shows some complexity. Try as an interesting alternative to Merlot.

An interesting white wine, with crisp acidity and dry flavors of apricots, tangerines, peaches, lemons, limes and white flowers. If you can’t tell what variety it is, that’s because it’s a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier.

Feels plush and important as soon as you taste it, not only for the ripe cherry, red currant, cola and spice flavors, but for the structure, which is dry and elegant. However, it’s a very young wine, not ready to drink, although that won’t stop many people from popping the cork now. Give it through the summer of 2009.

This is a young wine marked by intense tannins, intense cassis fruit and intense oak. All three elements stand out. You’ll want to cellar for a good six years to allow it all to mature and come together.

This wine sure is oaky now, although it’s sweet, high-class oak. But there’s a broad swath of ripe blackberry and cherry fruit, and enough tannins to hold this pretty wine for at least ten years.

Rich, plush aromas of dark plum and blackberry lead the way in this wine made mostly from old-vine Zinfandel and named after winemaker Nils Venge’s old dog, Scout. Full-bodied and brash, with smoky toast and jammy fruit (sounds like breakfast, right?) the wine has enough acidity to give it good balance.

A trifle vegetal on the nose, but boasts a supple, medium-weight mouthfeel to help compensate. Sappy cherry fruit and toasty oak define the flavors.
