Still very young, with the crispest of red currant fruits. There are almond and quince flavors to go with the raspberry juice acidity. At this stage, the dosage is not full integrated, showing an awkward final sweetness. Age for 4–5 years.

A full, ripe creamy wine with a fine balance between fresh red berries and pink grapefruit crispness. There is spice, followed by a mouthful of complex berries, red plums and a firm texture. This is already delicious, but could certainly age over several years.

Mature yes, but definitely not old. This wine is at its peak now, the fruit still amazingly fresh, but given wonderful complexity by toast, spice and almonds There is an intense acidity that leaves a mouthful of liveliness alongside the great depth of flavor.

A wine that shows an airy character. It is very open and fresh, the white fruits floating over a creamy texture and made crisp by grapefruit skin and bitter orange flavors. But it is just beginning to develop its potential, and the wine will likely fill out, as secondary flavors come through over the next 5–6 years.

This copper-colored beauty offers deep cherry, butterscotch candy and pastry-shop aromas, with whiffs of cinnamon and nutmeg. Cherry and croissant-pastry flavors are kept in check with a slight mineral tang; in the mouth, it's medium-weight, with medium bead. Finishes with complex caramel-chalk flavors. "Dig it," wrote one reviewer, who cautioned that it might be too elegant. No complaints here.

The standard-bearer, which, for many people, defines the classic taste of Champagne. Rich, round, lemony fruit fills the mouth, and there is a refreshing, lightly bitter, yeasty finish of citrus rind.

This is a gem, with lots of up-front toast. A typical structured year for Champagne, this has clean, round fruit, but retains good acid, providing firm support and longer-term aging potential than the ’95. It floats into a pleasing, vanilla cream and toast finish.

Very forward, with pretty strawberry/cherry fruit, and some earthy tannin in the finish. Like chocolate-covered cherries, with an unusual bittersweet character running through the finish.

Big, big, big—did I say big—flavors, with lush, full red fruits and a mouth-filling, almost juicy and long-lasting impression of ripe cherries. There’s plenty of vanilla and toast as well, rounding out a voluptuous finish. The fruit comes from top vineyards, and it’s exceptional all the way. —P.G.

The current release of the vintage wine, the 1998 seems a touch richer than the ’99, with hints of brioche, mushroom and ginger to its citrusy flavors. Round and soft in the mouth, but also a little short on the finish.
